Fall is getting more and more stronger. There are a lot of good stuff about autumn, but sometimes you want warm sunny summer days back. This week kept me pretty busy, college is not a joke, so when you are in it be prepared to spend an amount of your private time on doing homework and preparing for tests. But lets not talk about moody stuff, lets better talk about our PRECIOUS-music.
I've been thinking about the whole funk thing and decided that this time I need lay my, and your, eyes on the roots of that genre. Basically, funk is not that old music style, but it comes from the old, good JAZZ. Yes, New Orleans is very proud of whole blues and jazz music that fulfills the streets of city. I myself also have been involved in jazz as a singer and may I say that this is one of the most awesome and hardest genres to perform.
Going back too funk greatest roots I remembered one of the greatest songs to talk about. First time when I heard it was while watching my favorite TV series LUCIFER, and if ask people that know me well they'll tell you that I am a huge geek. Hearing this song for the first time I already had no doubt that this is pure JAZZ composition. The song Sinnerman performed by main actor Tom Ellis is unbelievable. May I add that Irish accent can definitely charm you and passion Tom gives to show the whole meaning of the words so you won't be confused about what Sinnerman is about. Also I like the soft, classic jazz mannerism when you hear nothing more than singer and the keys. Surely, Tom Ellis as Lucifer brings us this song only as a cover version ,but it perfectly fits the plot of the TV series.
Talking about the original version, I guess you cannot find that. As I searched more information about the song then more confused I become. A lot of jazzmen & jazzwomen performed Sinnerman and everyone does it in their own way. But the most popular Sinnerman performer was and is Nina Simone. Her version of the song is more different than Tom's. There are included the whole band. Guitars, percussions ,keys, back vocals, everything in a best New Orleans jazz traditions. When you listen to it ,it feels like you are in the middle of a woo-doo ritual session or something. And Nina's voice, OMG, I think I am in love. She has this soft, low timbre that not that much woman have, but it is definitely one of the best one.
I know that jazz is peculiar music genre and not that much like listen to it, but I swear you won't regret it. The worst you can get of listening to Sinnerman is falling in love with Lucifer( not only talking about the series). So I leave this article and videos here and you are the one to decide what to do with it. Go, listen and ENJOY!
Some cover ;)
