Hello everyone! I keep breaking my own kind of rules, I guess, because this Friday I again prepared to give a tiny excursion into the universe of jazz connected music. There are just so many jazz babies that you can’t decide which one you love the most. So, if you don’t mind I’ll keep discovering and writing more than just funk now on Fridays.

Days keep getting colder as October keep passing by. But I found something that may save or bring some warmth into our lives. How do you get cozy these days? Maybe under the blanket with a cup of hot chocolate or tea or something even hotter. Mentioning “something hotter” I was thinking about a glass of wine or whiskey (only if you are age allow it) and someone who you drinking with. Sounds not connected with music right now, yes? But actually it is, kind of, the Devil Doll song’s Bourbon in Your Eyes main parts.

Devil Doll is an American music band that is not performing now, but their music is the most incredible thing. The band works in rockabilly style which is associated with 50’s when the known Elvis Presley made a revolution in music industry with rock-n-roll and his hips moves (everyone knows that 😉). Rockabilly was, and is, a baby of our dearest and well known rock-n-roll and swing, hillbilly, blues, boogie, country. Looks like something crazy so you start thinking that never heard anything of this kind, but I’d say you definitely did.

All the songs that Devil Doll wrote are incredible, but I fell for Bourbon in Your Eyes. There are so many meanings, every word may include 3 or 5 different contexts. The word Bourbon may tell about color of the eyes, the physical state (he is drunk) and mental state of the person. This song reminds me of the gangster times, where I definitely didn’t live, but you can sense that mood. Listening to this amazing jam performed by Duffy you can close your eyes and imagine this scene- big city, you sitting in the club or pub of 30’s-50’s, there is that muffled light, round tables all over the hall and there is stage in front of you with this amazing band and solo singer, something like Jessica Rabbit style from “Who framed Roger Rabbit”. This feeling sends shivers down my spine. Plus Duffy, the lead singer, has that deep and soft voice, so charming. She is so desperately tells the whole story where she is in love with the guy, but he is just a player, casanova if you like. It feels like every time she sings “You have bourbon in your eyes” she gives a different meaning, so you need to listen closely to verse. Also, keys and sax collaboration give that atmosphere so you want to dance and think about so many things at the same time. So when the bridge starts it is like explosion you won’t be able resist it.

I haven’t something like this in a long time and trust me, it feels so good. I literally drown in the thoughts and got back to those times when woman were wearing fur and were smoking, and had been that powerful so that was almost poisonous and it was better not to mess up with them. I guess this Devil Doll single became mine this week’s jam. Please, don’t judge me, just go and listen to Bourbon in Your Eyes and you’ll understand more clearly what I am talking about.
