Hey everyone! If you thought that I am dead, then sorry, I should disappoint you. But this week sure was a hell busy for me. And speaking about hell, I have noticed that my last Friday posts are not only about jazz, blues and New Orleans connected genres, but also have connection either with Devil or the “Other Side”. It is might sound funny, but I promise, I don’t do it on purpose. That is why I want to apologize in advance for this post.

I guess, my Fridays are not more connected particularly to funk. Now it looks more like discovering new music genres, what no one pays too much attention. Not that long ago I have found that amazing Canadian music band called The Dead South (now you see why I was sorry 😄 ). Those guys won my attention with their combination of style(visually) and combination of music genres. When you first hear their song, the first thought is “It is country and something else”. Actually The South Dead play music in bluegrass and country styles. Because of that mix you get the feel of the greatest Old School, when you can time travel. Bluegrass is a complicated music style which is “love baby” of blues, jazz and folk, mostly UK and Irish folk. As every jazz and folk connected genres bluegrass is quite old, but The Dead South do make it sound fresh.

The Dead South style is extravagant and classy, but I still don’t know where to put them. They look like a mix of Jewish and Irish cultures plus something from country style, so it makes my confused a bit. But it great represents all thing about their music. Also it is interesting how they use their instruments. Who could imagine that you can play cello like it is some kind of guitar… This is actually is country music classy instruments- cello, banjo, mandolin, they only miss violin for full set.

Band’s music is more than just great songs, those are full, completed stories they are telling us. The song In Hell I'll be in Good Company is one of the amazing examples. As you start listening to it you won’t even notice the problem. It starts with simplest folky-jazzy chords and whistling melody as an introduction, and when the whole band joins you know something is going to happen. The full meaning is hidden behind the lyrics, if you can’t hear them properly then read them. This is one of the darkest stories that I read, you can even film a short thriller based on it. They sing it that light, with all those harmonies what their voices make so it make you tense up a bit. It is like a hard break up story with no good outcome of events.

I don’t want to open all the cards of this game, because it won’t be interesting. If you are intrigued already then you need to listen to In Hell I’ll be in Good Company, so you can figure it out why this guy thinks so. I always said that hell will be more fun than paradise (sorry for religious content), I don’t want to offend anyone. But really, The Dead South are awesome, fresh, genius band, which is on tour right now 😉. So if you are interested and have an opportunity to visit their concert in Germany, Denmark, UK ,Canada, use it. If not, then use the opportunity to listen them online .Join me and ENJOY!
